Vt. Governor Concerned about Fiscal Cliff

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

After Vermont's unemployment rate inched up last month, Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin says politicians in Washington need to stop the country from going over the so-called "fiscal cliff."

Shumlin says that could send the nation back into a recession. He says solving the financial mess could improve the economy.

"I'm convinced that not only will we see a slow economic recovery from this recession but if they really find ways to significantly put America back on a fiscal, responsible fiscal course, I think you're going to see economic development again across the country and Vermont too," says Shumlin.

Shumlin says a deficit compromise should include ways to cut spending and also higher taxes for wealthy Americans.

The governor says he is optimistic Congress will work something out but likely not by the end of the year.
