Warm Weather Breeds Bigger Turkeys

WESTFORD, Vt. -

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving was certainly a warm one near Lake Champlain. It's giving people the chance to get out and enjoy the outdoors but it's also good news for turkey lovers.

Judy Adams of the Adams Turkey Farm in Westford, Vermont says that the warm weather over the past few months is a reason that the turkeys are bigger than usual this year.

"The warmer fall has actually created less stress on the bird," Adams said.

She says less stress means the birds are bigger than normal. The past three years have been warmer than normal during the time the turkeys grow. The period between July and October has been 2.89 degrees warmer than average.

I can hold four of them in my hand when they first arrive so they grow incredibly fast and it's fun to watch them grow," Adams said.

They've been so big this year that some people searching for smaller turkeys are having a hard time finding one. But Adams said there are no plans to breed them smaller.

"Our policy is to take the best care of the birds we can because our customers know that we do that and it's really a nice product," Adams said.
