COLCHESTER, Vt. -
You might experience more success putting together a spending plan, rather than a budget this Black Friday.
Financial advisors say shoppers should think of a budget like a diet.
They feel restricted in what they can and can't do, whereas a spending plan allows them to feel more in control.
A local advisor gives this advice, when creating your holiday spending plan, decide a total amount that you can spend then plan on only spending 80% of that.
This way, you can use the extra 20% for the unexpected.
Also, don't hit up the stores on an empty stomach.
"If you eat a good breakfast then you are more likely to make good decisions. And, also to take frequent breaks. Stop what you're doing to reset, recalibrate yourself and tally up what you spent so far," Rebecca Walsh, of Pathway Financial Advisors, said.
If you're planning involves a strict amount that you can spend, you might consider using cash. Otherwise, using credit is fine as long as long as you keep track.
