PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -
The parking lot outside the Clinton County, New York Human Service Center was full Monday.
But the amount of people calling in was even greater.
"It's not bad in the lobby, but the phone calls are crazy, right now we've got about 300 voicemails to return and our voicemail is full," said Clinton County HEAP Director Debbie Wilcox.
Wilcox says people are rushing to get these applications in.
Monday was the first time people could sign-up and Wilcox say there's always a lot of questions.
"If they've never gotten HEAP before we need birth certificates, social security cards, proof of their residence, proof of their fuel dealer and proof of all their income," said Wilcox.
Even though you have until March to apply government leaders say you shouldn't wait that long that's because they're anticipating more people signing up this time around and with the same amount of dollars as last time you might miss out.
One good thing this year Wilcox says is instead of two payments, people will just get one.
If you use oil, HEAP will give up to $650-dollars.
And for electric you can get up to $450.
No matter the assistance needed, leaders say it's important to keep one thing in mind as you work with them.
"Just patience," said Wilcox.
So they can get you the help you need for when the temperature drops.
