SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -
For fans of Twinkies, there's a lot of concern for their yellow sponge cake filled with vanilla cream.
That's because Hostess, the company that makes Twinkies and other iconic snacks, is shutting down.
In the aisles of Price Chopper in South Burlington Friday, shoppers say they had a hard time believing Hostess products including the Twinkie might soon be off the shelves forever.
"Unbelievable. It's such an iconic part of American life," says Elizabeth Wilson, Hostess fan.
After 82-years, the Twinkie fell victim to a labor dispute. Hostess blamed striking workers for the company closing. Those workers wouldn't agree to major pay cuts.
Soon after the word of Hostess' end, its products flew off the shelves across the country.
At Price Chopper Friday afternoon, there were just a few loaves of Wonder Bread left and the last two Twinkie boxes went to Gina McLean.
"My son has never had them so I figured I have to buy them now so he can at least have them once in his life," says McLean.
While McLean is set, Price Chopper says what is on the shelves is all it's got. That means Wilson will have some work to do to find her childhood favorite.
"I'm going to try and see if I can get a couple and put them in the closet or something for a rainy day," says Wilson.
No surprise people are paying big bucks for Twinkies now.
Boxes that used to sell for a few bucks are now going for $60 or more on eBay.
