Chittenden County Emergency Food Shelf Asks For Turkey Donations

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

We're a week away from Thanksgiving, and Chittenden County Emergency Food Shelf officials say there's a huge need for donations.

Seven different companies donated hundreds of dollars Thursday to help fill the gap.

But food shelf leaders say they still need 1,600 turkeys to reach their goal.

Officials waited to ask for help until after the election.

But they say this year has been difficult getting people to donate.

"I've been here for 5 years and this is lowest total, not just in turkeys but in food donations and monetary donations we've just seen a steady decline since '07. It has to be directly related to the economy," said Chittenden County Emergency Food Shelf Director Rob Meehan.

If you want to help out, leaders say a donation of ten dollars will buy a turkey.

They're hoping to meet their goal by the end of the week.
