MONTPELIER, Vt. -
Vermont House Speaker Shap Smith of Morristown is facing some competition.
Vermont State Rep. Paul Poirier, an independent from Barre, says he's also running for the post.
Poirier will formally announce his plans on Wednesday during an event at the Vermont Statehouse in Montpelier.
Poirier was first elected to the Legislature in 1980. Over the years he has served 16 years. He will be starting his ninth term in January.
Smith, of Morristown, plans to seek re-election to the post he's held since 2009.
