Early AP Call Upsets Many Vermont Republicans

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

State Senator Randy Brock made his way into the Capital Plaza ballroom shortly after the polls closed Tuesday and let everyone know he wasn't ready to give up.

Brock was upset because minutes earlier the Associated Press called the race for Governor Peter Shumlin.

That projection came by 7:10.

Brock wasn't the only one upset.

"I think that's unbelievable. I don't know whether they're using exit polls or that they're using some information that we're not all not available to all Vermonters," said Vermont GOP Chairman Jack Lindley.

A couple hours later however, Brock bought into the results, and decided to concede.

"I actually saw real numbers," said Brock.

But Brock says it took him awhile to make it official, because he couldn't pass along that message to his opponent.

"I've attempted to get a hold of Governor Shumlin and unfortunately I'm not able to reach him by telephone but I will be speaking with him as soon as I possibly can to wish him success in continuing in his role as chief officer in our state," said Brock.

Now that the race is over, Brock says he plans to stay involved in state politics.

And he says there's no regrets about waiting to start his bid for Vermont's top seat after the legislative session ended in May.

"I signed on to serve as a state senator and being present at debates and committee hearings is part of that job and that's what I committed to people that's what I would do, and I did," said Brock.

Brock leaves Vermont politics after serving as state auditor and spending the past four years as state senator from Franklin County.

He's not ruling out a run for a different political position in the future.
