Incumbents Seen Likely Safe in Vermont

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

The most competitive contests for statewide office in Vermont this year appear to be those for auditor and treasurer.

Incumbent Democrat Beth Pearce is seeking a full term as treasurer but has drawn a spirited challenge from Rutland City Treasurer Wendy Wilton, who has benefited from heavy independent expenditures on ads supporting her from a Republican-leaning super PAC.

The auditor's office is currently open, with incumbent Republican Tom Salmon stepping down. It's being sought by longtime Republican state Sen. Vincent Illuzzi and Democrat Doug Hoffer, who lost to Salmon in 2010.
