COLCHESTER, Vt. -

44 year old Stephen Davis of Swanton, Vermont is arrested on charges of embezzlement and income tax fraud. Investigators say he stole thousands of dollars in copper from his employer, Champlain Cable Corporation.Police found that nearly 14 thousand pounds of copper were missing. A task Detective Corporal Mark Jacobs says is no easy feat.

"14 thousand pounds has to be taken from the company and brought over to New York State.  The spools that we turned in were five, six, 700 hundred pounds," said Detective Jacobs.

With copper at 3 dollars 53 cents a pound, he was making a hefty amount.

"Over 46 thousand dollars that was sold to a metal place in New York State," said Detective Jacobs.

Davis was a third shift supervisor and repeatedly brought the copper from Colchester over to a business in Morrisonville, New York.

"He didn't have a friend there I think he just considered that place a spot to go," said Detective Jacobs.

According to the affidavit by police, the company saw on surveillance video, Davis directing a truck and loading material. When confronted by his employer, he admitted to stealing "scrap copper" on several occasions, and admitted to having money problems.

We reached out to Champlain Cable who was unavailable for comment. Investigators say the case is on-going and additional arrests are possible.
