Winooski Pumpkin Festival

WINOOSKI, Vt. -

While it was a bit windy Tuesday, the wind was nothing compared to the previous night, which made the Winooski community very happy. Organizers and volunteers were worried the weather might put a damper on the event, but the attendance was better than expected.

Spooky pumpkins, Charlie Brown pumpkins and even Gangnam style pumpkins; "We probably have around 700 on display tonight," said Sally Tipson, organizer.

700 uniquely carved and decorated pumpkins for all of Winooski to enjoy.

"It's really cool, I think it's a good idea for people to volunteer and do this for the kids, the kids get very excited about it," said spectator, Mary Miller.

They've been decorating the park square during Halloween for 10 years, "This past Saturday we had probably over 100 people carving pumpkins," said Tipson.

With Sandy striking the day before, volunteers weren't sure if the weather would cooperate, "We had trailers full of un carved pumpkins we didn't know if we should carve them or not carve them. Then when the day came, we decided to do it and we lucked out," said Tipson.

While the wind was whipping, volunteers did their best to make sure the pumpkins stayed lit.

But they know Sandy could've been a lot worse.

"It's been a great day down here, the wind is a little tough but overall it's a really good day and it's warm," said Tipson.
