American Red Cross Sends 7 Local Volunteers to Help With Sandy Relief

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Seven American Red Cross volunteers from our area are headed to the New York City area to help out with Sandy recovery efforts.

Sandy forced more than 250 shelters to open across the northeast.

Right now, just those volunteers will be headed, not other supplies.

Red Cross leaders in Vermont say they wanted to give back, after so many helped after Tropical Storm Irene hit last year.

"My last communication with some folks down in the New York, New Jersey area and New England was [Monday] during an afternoon conference call and to hear what they were going through was really heart wrenching. We had gone through it a year ago and my heart went out to them," said American Red Cross spokesperson Doug Bishop.

The six people from Vermont and one in New Hampshire will leave Wednesday morning.
