MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Some Vermont schools have canceled classes as Hurricane Sandy approaches, and others are planning short days.

Elaine Pinckney, superintendent of Chittenden South Supervisory District, said it appears southern schools will be impacted more on Monday, while northern schools will be affected more on Tuesday.

The University of Vermont canceled classes and other activities as of 4 p.m. Monday.

Gov. Peter Shumlin declared a state of emergency Sunday ahead of the storm's arrival to give Vermont access to National Guard troops and federal emergency response funds if needed.

Green Mountain Power secured more than 250 outside line workers and tree trimmers to assist in restoring power to customers.

The storm was expected to start affecting southern Vermont by early Monday afternoon, with potentially hurricane-force winds starting later in the day.
