Vermont Concerned about Strong Winds from Sandy

Posted: Updated:
WATERBURY, Vt. -

Vermont leaders say they're holding off for now on declaring a State of Emergency in anticipation of Hurricane Sandy.

They say they want to see how the storm develops.  That's not stopping them from making sure crews and resources are in place around the state.

In Waterbury, Vermont Friday, Public Safety Commissioner Keith Flynn offered Vermonters a bit of reassurance about Sandy.

"This is not going to be a repeat of Irene," says Flynn.

Flynn says Sandy will be a slower moving storm, with likely less rain in Vermont.  He says the major problem could be high winds.

"What part of the state are you most concerned about?" asked FOX44/ABC22.

"If we look at historically some of the areas that have been hit by strong winds, we'd look at the Rutland area, the Route 4 corridor," says Flynn.

The State of Vermont and towns are still repairing damage from Irene a year ago.  We wanted to know what could happen to repairs to bridges, roads, and streams, many of which are considered inadequate.

"Any concerns that you guys have that these repairs won't stand up to any level of flooding?" asked FOX44/ABC22.

"We're going to keep an eye on things for sure," says Scott Rogers, Vermont Agency of Transportation Director of Operations.

Rogers says all the repairs, even short-term ones, are considered stable.

While Vermonters should make sure they are ready for the storm, Flynn says people shouldn't be too worried.

"We're not meaning to create or add to that anxiety, we're just making sure that we're prepared," says Flynn.

Vermont Emergency Management says it's going to keep an eye on the storm over the weekend.  On Monday, they'll make a decision about opening the command center in Waterbury.
