VT Attorney General Suing VerMints For Mislabeling Products

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

The Vermont Attorney General's office is suing a company, it says, is unfairly profiting off the state.

Vermont has oodles of local products from maple syrup to Vermont apple cider - it's a marketing strategy the state wants to make sure stays protected.

"You know the Vermont name means something and you want to make sure that the company that says its Vermont is," Vermont Attorney General Bill Sorrell (D) said.

The Attorney General's office is suing the company VerMints for mislabeling tins of mints as Vermont products.

The company sold about $2 million of mints and are manufactured in Canada. Since the product is not manufactured in the state, it violates the state's labeling laws.

"I think the owner lives in Massachusetts so limited connection to Vermont today," Sorrell said.

All of VerMints now read Vermints, but on the back label you'll still find Vermont ingredients such as Vermont maple syrup and Vermont Pure Natural Spring water.

On their website, the company boasts the partnership with other Vermont companies, such as Green Mountain Coffee. VerMint's gives a portion of its proceeds to the Vermont Children's Trust, but Sorrell says the company can't buy its way into the law.

We did reach out to the CEO of the company, who addressed us to his attorney.

Private Attorney John Campbell read the press release and feels it's unfortunate that the Attorney General did not provide the full and accurate story.

Campbell says he will either issue a press release or have a press conference to fully address the issues the Attorney General set out.
