The Vermont State Employees Credit Union says it threw out records for about 85,000 members.
The CEO say there's no evidence the missing, unencrypted computer tapes fell into the wrong hands.
Instead, the company thinks the tapes, containing personal data and transaction data were accidentally put in a landfill. They can't be retrieved because they're buried.
Members are being offered free credit monitoring and data protection for a year.
