BURLINGTON, Vt. -

The American Cancer Society in Burlington, Vt. is mourning the loss of a woman who was instrumental in creating a place for cancer patients to get help.

Bee Tabakin lost her own battle with cancer last week.

She was 89.

The Hope Lodge in Burlington was named after her and her close friend Lois McClure.

It's a place that houses people receiving treatment at no cost.

Those who knew Tabakin say the community lost a true hero.

"You always felt that she was always going to somehow pull through and unfortunately this last time she didn't," Dr. Richard Branda, Retired Professor of Medicine, said.

Tabakin wasn't just known for her work in Burlington. In 2009, the American Cancer Society honored her with the prestigious Saint George National Award for dedicated service.
