Wildflower Inn Owners Join Maine Anti-Gay Marriage Fight

LYNDONVILLE, Vt. -

Two Vermont innkeepers who were sued for not hosting a lesbian wedding reception have now joined the fight to prevent gay marriage from becoming legal in Maine.

The new ad features Jim and Mary O'Reilly who own the Wildflower Inn in Lyndonville.

In August, they settled a lawsuit that was brought by the lesbian couple.  That settlement is now the focus of ad opposing Maine's same-sex marriage referendum.

"A lesbian couple sued us for not supporting their gay wedding because of our Christian beliefs. We had to pay $30,000 and can no longer host any weddings at our inn," says O'Reilly during the ad.

Gay marriage supporters say the ad is wrong and that the O'Reilly's were sued because they had violated Vermont's anti-discrimination laws.

FOX 44 reached out to the O'Reilly's several times but did not hear back from them.
