Cash for Paws: Radio Donations Support Shelter Animals

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -

Would you pay ten dollars to hear your favorite song? .......No?
Well how about if it helped our four legged friends?

One local radio station is taking requests... and money to help the Homeward Bound Animal Welfare Center in Addison County.

The "Cash for Paws" phone-a-thon started today and goes until Friday night.

"Bruce and Hobbes Cash for Paws fundraiser in support of the Addison County Humane Society," Bruce Zeman, General Manager of 92.1 WVTK, said live over the air waves.

They are the stars of the morning show. Bruce's co-host Hobbes is a rescue from the Homeward Bound Animal Welfare Center.

"He had been beaten and starved, he had bruises and welts all over him," Zeman said.

But now, Hobbes is not only famous, but in good hands. And for all of the weiner dog's extended family, the shelter dogs and cats need a home too.

"We have 151 animals in our shelter today with another 40 in foster care, so we are over capacity really," Jackie Rose, Executive Director of the Homeward Bound Animal Welfare Center said.

Starting Wednesday, and lasting through Friday, every song request costs ten bucks, all of that money will go to the shelter cats and dogs.

I asked Hobbes, "Are you hoping some of your dog friends get adopted today?  He didn't have much to say, but he is making a difference. Last year, the radio's phone-a-thon raised 12-thousand dollars.

"We go through 65 cans of cat food every single day," Rose said.

The goal this year, 15-thousand dollars. That can do a lot for an organization that relies solely on donations.

"We do a whole lot with a little bit of money and we appreciate everyone's support," Rose said.

All of the dogs and cats at the Homeward Bound Animal Welfare Center in Addison county are "out the door ready." They have their shots, have been spayed or neutered and have been micro chipped.
