Squirrels Eating and Destroying Apple Crops in VT

Posted: Updated:
WILLISTON, Vt. -

Apple growers faced different challenges this year than usual, fending off their crop from squirrels.

Thanks to last years mild winter and an abundance of acorn and beechnuts, the squirrel population is booming.

And some apple orchards in Vermont are feeling the effects.

A grower in southern Vermont says about half of his most profitable kind of apples were destroyed by squirrels.

In Williston, Vt., John Adams with Adams Orchard says his crop was not severely destroyed, but he can tell squirrels have been eating dozens of apples.

"Red squirrels in particular, they seem to be wanting to eat the apples. You'll find small bites out of a lot of the apples. You see them on the ground and know what animal is doing what to the apple," Adams said.

The plague is expected to end this winter in Vermont after a poor nut season this year.
