Despite No Crime Increase, Vt DOC Might Needs Millions More

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Vermont correctional leaders say they might need millions of more dollars than expected, even though the crime rate isn't rising.

Commissioner Andy Pallito met with state lawmakers in South Burlington Tuesday.

He says more people are being detained than the state has room for and that's causing them to ship inmates out of state, which is expensive.

Pallito expects lawmakers to consider changes, such as increasing the home detainment program, next year.

"I think we have to have a better understanding at this point of really who's being retained and that's the piece of data that I promised to the committee in the next month. Who's being detained, the reason they're being detained, the length of time and whether or not if they're being held without bail, and so on and so forth," said Pallito.

Pallito also spoke with lawmakers about building a new facility so they don't have to ship people out of state.

But he says that could cost $100-million dollars.
