MONTPELIER, Vt. -
Hunter education courses are going on across Vermont and to the experts at Vermont Fish and wildlife the important lesson is letting friends know what you're up to in the wilderness.
"It's very important to have a hunting plan," Vermont Fish and Wildlife Hunter Education expert Chris Saunders said.
But what exactly does a hunting plan entail?
"Where are you going, where are you going to park, what are you going after, where do you think you're going to be hunting um just the things that formulate a basic hunt plan," Saunders said.
Because even the most experienced people can find themselves in a tough situation.
"There are a lot of wild spots and you can easily find yourself in trouble or just turned around in a spruce swamp or somewhere and just not know where you're going. in this day and age everyone has a cell phone but of course in Vermont there are a lot of places where a cell phone doesn't work," Saunders said.
So in addition to your cell phone bring some extra supplies. A high energy bar for nutrition, a compass for direction, matches for a fire...and if possible a large plastic bag you can wrap your body in to stay warm. These are things you should be bringing with you not just sometimes but all the time.
"It doesn't matter if you're hunting or going for a hike this is basic standard safety equipment that all folks when they're going out especially deep in the woods need to have with them," Saunders said.
