Postal Service to Raise Rates in January

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

It'll cost another penny to mail a letter next year.

The postal service will raise rates in January.

This means first class mail will be 46 cents.

Under the law, the post office cannot raise stamp prices more than the rate of inflation or 2.6%, unless it gets special permission.

The post office is expected to lose a record $15 billion this year. They asked Congress to give it authority to raise prices by 5 cents.

Lawmakers failed to act.
