BURLINGTON, Vt. - A teenager accused of texting right before police say she hit a pedestrian with her car last year, has accepted a plea deal. Emma Vieira, 19, agreed to the terms of the deal Thursday afternoon.

Vieira pleaded guilty to two charges: gross negligent operation resulting in serious injury and negligent operation. She would serve five years probation for the first charge and up to six months in jail or home confinement for the second charge. Vieira also faces 500 hours of community service with people with traumatic brain injuries and would be forced to take drivers education courses.

In August 2011, police say Vieira hit Debbie Drewniak and her dog while they walked down River Road in Colchester, Vt. The dog died in the crash.
