Stink Bugs Looking to Find A Warm Spot This Winter

Posted: Updated:
PORTSMOUTH, N.H. -

A certain kind of bug is all the "stink." They certainly get their name for a reason.

If you live in New Hampshire, stink bugs are coming to a vent or window near you.

This is the time of year when they're looking for a warm spot to spend the winter.

The bugs have stink glands that give off a protective secretion when threatened by predators.

The scent is something like ammonia.

"They're all over the place and they'll just jump down on your from wherever," John Clark, of Rye, N.H., said.

"Couple of us have been looking at where we found them in Portsmouth, N.H. and noticed there's a major number of car dealers right where they appeared," Alan Eaton, from the UNH Cooperative Extension, said. "There's also a major rail line right smack where they appeared."

The stink bug only made its way to the U.S. from Asia in the late 90's. It made it to Portsmouth two years ago.

One theory is they came with cargo shipments, believe it or not possibly with cars manufactured in Japan and elsewhere.

They're more than stinky, they're capable of wiping out millions of dollars worth of crops a year.
