Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf Crisis

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

The amount of money the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf normally receives was cut in half. That's equivalent to more than one million pounds of food, but more people than ever need food assistance.

Working families simply aren't making enough to make ends meet, and now, financial donations to local food shelves are needed to help close the gap.

"The Senate recently passed a farm bill, which includes a number of nutrition programs, the House has yet to do that, we'll see what happens. My fear is that in the Republican House, there may be significant cuts to food stamps and other programs," Senator Bernie Sanders said.

It's estimated that more than nine million Americans over the age of 50 are at risk of going hungry every day.

Children make up for an even larger number.
