ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. -
A new group in Vermont thinks taxes are way too high and believes something needs to be done about them.
Ellie Martin and Deb Billado organized a picnic in Essex Junction, Vermont Sunday. It was for their new group Vermont Taxpayers' Picnics.
"Taxes are very high and people are questioning why," says Billado.
"Vermont is one of the highest taxed states in the Union," says Martin. "Remember we have sales tax, property taxes, income taxes. We have them all."
Martin says this was the second picnic the group has organized, where anyone is invited to come and talk about government.
"We're interested in more people becoming involved and listening to all parties," says Billado.
All political parties might have been invited, but based on the signs and the candidates here, the event had a very strong republican flavor.
Organizers say they hope the picnics spark conversations about how to stop taxes from increasing and find ways to cut government spending.
"You have to look at what are your essential needs," says Billado.
The group hopes to hold more picnics in the future and become more active in elections, especially in two-years.
