Illegal Immigrants Want Vermont Driver's Licenses, Lawmakers Weigh Pros & Cons

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

More than 1,500 illegal immigrants want Vermont driver's licenses.

Vermont is considering providing them.

A group of migrant workers argues they're vital to Vermont's dairy industry.

There aren't Visas for dairy workers and they'd like to stay permanently.

Since they can't get driver's licenses, they can't leave the farm.

Vermont lawmakers and activists are looking into whether the state would benefit from issuing driver's licenses.

The plan is to have a bill ready for the legislature in January or come to the conclusion that this idea won't work in Vermont.
