VT Telecom Firm Gets $2M to Expand Wireless

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. -

A Vermont telecommunications company is among the winners of the Federal Communications Commission's first "mobility fund auction."

VTel will use the money to expand wireless coverage along 941 miles of Vermont roadways, primarily in Orange and Caledonia counties, but also in parts of Washington, Chittenden, Addison and in other parts of the state.

The Springfield-based telecommunications provider must complete its project within three years and make the network available to other providers for roaming so that as many consumers as possible can benefit from the new networks.

Gov. Peter Shumlin is expected to discuss the issue Thursday in a Montpelier news conference.
