VT City Votes to Ban Marijuana Dispensaries

Posted: Updated:
RUTLAND, Vt. -

Officials in Rutland, Vt., have unanimously approved a ban on medical marijuana dispensaries in the city.

The state has approved four medical marijuana dispensaries around Vermont, but also allows towns to opt out.

The Rutland Herald reports Police Chief James Baker told aldermen last week that such dispensaries had become crime magnets in other states. There was no debate on the measure during Monday's vote.

Registered medical marijuana patients can still grow their own plants and become members at other dispensaries. Two dispensaries have been licensed so far in Burlington and Waterbury.

Vermont has 411 patients and 68 caregivers on its medical marijuana registry, which allows them permission to grow enough for their own use. The dispensaries would give patients who can't grow marijuana another means of getting it.
