I got the e-mail. The e-mail I get twice per year. Would you like to participate in this winter's weather forecast??? YES!
Every winter and summer season, the folks at the National Weather Service and participating meteorologists of the media forecast the upcoming season. It's a fun little side contest where the winner gets to have a treat from the BTV Snack Shop. That snack shop is a special place, where soda and snacks live and the winners can get those treats for FREE!
Here is last year's winter contest. It had the following categories:
Date of last measurable snow in Burlington
Greatest snow depth in Burlington
Total snowfall in Burlington
Coldest temperature for Saranac Lake, NY
Number of days with measurable snow for Burlington
Joe's Pond Ice Out date and time
Let's just say I didn't win any of the categories :( Last year was a disappointing season for winter and snow lovers. Many of us put in a forecast with above average snow and colder temperatures. The result was the opposite, a very mild and dry winter. These things happen. Seasonal forecasting is very difficult. That's why I like to do these contests. It's humbling, but also a good learning opportunity for seasonal outlooks.
Here's what actually happened last year:
Date of last measurable snow in Burlington: 3/10/2012 with 1.7"
Greatest snow depth in Burlington: 4 inches! On several occasions
Total snowfall in Burlington: 37.7 inches. Third-least snowfall in Burlington on record.
Coldest temperature for Saranac Lake, NY: -27°F
Number of days with measurable snow for Burlington: 47 days
Joe's Pond Ice Out date and time: 4/8/2012 at 5:25 p.m.
I'll be making my forecast this week and releasing it in a blog. I'll give you a hint of what I'm thinking. I'm going average snowfall for Burlington, but cold temps in the mid-late winter. Oh and by the way, snow is possible this Columbus Day weekend! For more information on THAT, see Chief Meteorologist Kerrin Jeromin's awesome blog here:
