RUTLAND, Vt. -
Alex Spanos, 23 of Rutland, Vt., walked into a Rutland courtroom Friday wearing a suit and with a noticeable limp.
Nearly two days prior police say he's the man who lost control of his car in front of a Rutland business.
Spanos did so they say because he was getting high from an aerosol can.
But he didn't just wreck his car. He hit several other cars and struck Ron and Carly Ferro.
Both were taken to the hospital, but Carly died.
And on Friday, Spanos faced six charges, including manslaughter and gross negligence while driving a vehicle resulting in death.
"Mr. Spanos would enter pleas of not guilty your honor," said defense attorney Mary Kay Lantier.
Spanos didn't say a word, but stood silently and looked toward the ground as prosecutors asked the judge for several conditions of his release, including no more driving.
"He shall not purchase or possess aerosol sprays," said prosecutor Marc Brierre.
Although it was only five minutes, it was clear Ferro's friends had a hard time sitting through it as cries rang outside the courtroom.
It wasn't just difficult for people inside the courthouse, reminders of Wednesday's tragedy can still be found at the scene where parking spots are replaced with flowers and melted candles.
Signs that show Friday's court appearance hasn't erased any of the pain, so many are feeling.
Spanos' bail was set at $200,000-dollars.
He's due back in court next month.
