MOOERS FORKS, N.Y. -
Wednesday, a case of animal cruelty in Mooers, New York, brings a
community together to fight for dozens of neglected dogs.
It's a story we first
told you about last week, and while we strive to be your voice, many thanked us
for being the voice of a different kind.
Dogs severely malnourished, no food and water covered in green
algae.
"Pitiful, worst case of animal cruelty, I've ever seen, the mama
dog was so thin, so starved and she just had a litter of pups," said animal
supporter, Karen Jennette.
In mid September, the dogs were rescued from what many
describe as a puppy mill. Wednesday night dozens of people watched and waited,
as the man accused of animal abuse, was due in court.
"I can't imagine a person being that horrific," said Jennette.
Court started on time at 7pm and even 45 minutes later, the
accused was a no show.
"I would've like to see him and have him see me," said Marcia
Lisitski.
One of the dogs, known as Lucky, managed to escape and first come
to her house. She then contacted the proper authorities.
"I cry all the time," said Lisitski.
But doesn't know how she'll take the news if the dogs are forced
to go back, "Crushed. I won't understand."
Karen Jennette is optimistic and is ready to take home the mama
dog who she says needs the most love.
"The pups will go. Everyone wants a puppy, but I'm afraid the mama
will sit there and I want to give her a good home."
Minutes before our 10 pm newscast, a woman who was at court
called and told us, the accused man did in fact show up, around 8 o'clock. According
to her the case is not over, he will once again appear in court on Oct. 4th.
It's still unknown who will get custody of the dogs. For more information on
the dogs, check out the Mooers Animal Shelter Facebook page.
