Clinton County Gets Tougher on Synthetic Drugs

Posted: Updated:
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -

The Clinton County Legislature passed a new law that will increase the penalties for people caught selling or having banned synthetic drugs.

Before those people would face fines.  Now under the new law, they could face bigger fines and more importantly jail time.

"I think it will cause some, most of these individuals if not all of them to stop selling," says Andrew Wylie, Clinton County District Attorney.

Wylie says despite the current ban some stores are still selling synthetic drugs sometimes knows as bath salts.

That is why Clinton County Sheriff David Favro says the ban on synthetic drugs doesn't seem to be working and the problem seems to be getting worse.

Favro says these synthetic drugs are really a dangerous science experiment and it appears people, especially teenagers, are willing to participate.

"We have a number of kids that have been hospitalized for psychotic episodes," says Wylie.

Now the law has to be officially approved in Albany and then new punishments will go into effect.
