Accused Stabber Wants Jail Phone Calls Kept Private

ST. ALBANS, Vt. -

A St. Albans man accused of stabbing his girlfriend while holding their six-month old baby was back in court Wednesday.

Steven Fairbanks' defense attorney argued that recordings of phone call Fairbanks made from jail should remain confidential.  But prosecutors say there's no expectation of privacy because inmates are warned their calls be recorded.

"It's not as if we're wiretapping his phone for fun so we can listen to 800 hours of phone calls. There's useful information in the phone calls," says Deborah Celis, Franklin County Deputy State's Attorney.

The judge says he will decide later about what to do with the recordings.

Prosecutors say Fairbanks faces charges including first degree attempted murder for the attack in October last year.
