Local Referee Weighs In On Seahawks Vs. Packers Game

Posted: Updated:

Monday night's Seahawks vs. Packers game is creating a lot of buzz over what many say was a bad call and cost Green Bay the win.  This is all stems from the NFL Referees Association lockout, and because negotiations have gone nowhere, replacement refs are calling the shots. Which leaves NFL fans hoping an agreement is coming sooner than later.

With eight seconds left in the game in front of a crowd of 62 thousand people, Seahawks QB Russell Wilson threw a Hail Mary into the end zone, while in the air wide receiver Golden Tate shoves Green Bay corner back Sam Shields to the ground, and catches the 24 yard pass to win the game 14-12. Despite what seemed to be an interception by Green Bay Packers, M.D. Jennings, and what should have been a penalty for offensive pass interference, which would've ended the game.

The replacement refs had opposing calls and fans around the nation buzzing.

"That's probably the worst thing that officials can do, and we talk about that locally in our high school boar," said, Bill O'Connor, the commissioner for the NVAC-CVL High School Leagues, he refs basketball, and says it's always a big adjustment to move referees up.

"I'm sure that's the biggest struggle that these collegiate officials are having in officiating NFL games, it's too fast for them, they aren't used to that pace and as a result they are making mistakes," said O' Connor.

Even the NFL released a statement saying; Referee Wayne Elliott determined that no indisputable visual evidence existed to overturn the call on the field, and as a result, the on-field touchdown stood.

O'Connor says, locally, refs receive this book of rules to read and comprehend but no matter the situation, calls are based on judgment.

"What the common fan watching the game doesn't quite understand, the interpretation of the rule, not the definition of the rule."

A Las Vegas gambling expert from pregame.com says he thinks a majority of bets were on the packers, and that sports books took in at least $150 million because of the call.
