Burlington City Council Looking into Winooski Hydro-Electric Dam to Control Electric Costs

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

In Burlington, city councilors think a Winooski Hydro-electric dam is worth looking into.

At the meeting Monday night, councilors voted 11 to 1 to have Burlington Electric enter into negotiations over a purchase price.

The dam is a 7.3 megawatt facility just down the hill from UVM.

If purchased, it would satisfy up to 10% of BED's electric needs.

The department think it's a good way to stabilize power costs in the long run.

"The other benefit to this acquisition is the power is already located within the city limits of Burlington," Barbara Grimes, Burlington Electric Department, said. "So we don't have additional transmission costs to get this power."

The city of Burlington will have to put down a $100,000 dollar deposit.
