Quakers to Hold Service Outside Vt. Nuclear Plant

VERNON, Vt. -

(AP) - A group of Quakers is planning a non-violent religious service outside the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant in Vernon to show concern about the plant's continued operation.

At least a dozen members of Burlington Friends Meeting of Quakers plan to attend the service on Sunday at 1 p.m. Quakers from several other meetings in Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts also are expected to show up.

Jane Van Landingham, clerk for the Burlington Friends Meeting, says it's not a political demonstration with signs and chants. She told the Burlington Free Press (bfpne.ws/TelB7i) that  it's a Quaker meeting for worship, based on silence, with speaking only as the spirit leads.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved a 20-year license extension for Vermont Yankee last year.
