Wind Power an Issue in Vt Lt Gov's Race

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

(AP) - Wind power is becoming an issue in the race for Vermont lieutenant governor.

Incumbent Republican Phil Scott supports a two-year moratorium on all major wind developments in order to study the environmental impact of the projects.

But Cassandra Gekas, who's running as both the Democratic and Progressive candidate, says it's a mistake to impose a moratorium at this time.

Vermont Public Radio says that as more large-scale wind projects are proposed throughout the state, the debate over the projects intensifies.

Gekas acknowledges the issue is dividing Vermonters in some communities, but she sees wind as a part of a bigger renewable energy policy.

Scott says a moratorium is needed in order to have a thorough assessment of the performance of industrial wind projects and their environmental impacts.
