UPDATE: Meth Bust in St. Johnsbury

Posted: Updated:
ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. -

Two people were arrested for a meth bust in St. Johnsbury Thursday.

Thaddeus Gordon and Shawn Greenwood were arrested and charged with conspiracy to manufacture meth. Both men appeared in federal court in Burlington Thursday.

Police found some chemicals used to make the drug in a field, near a cemetery. More chemicals were found in the apartment complex where the accused drug makers live.

Even though they weren't expecting an explosion, they did evacuate the building, just to be safe.  Police won't say how long they've been following this lead.

Not far from the side of the road, police say meth was cooking. The lab they busted Thursday was nestled in a field near the Mount Pleasant cemetery.

"It's kinda hidden where it's at, where it was taking place but there are some objects out there that the general public may not know what they're looking at," Lieutenant Mike Henry said, of the Vermont State Police St. Johnsbury Barracks.

All of this commotion had cars stopping and people asking questions,

"It's pretty crazy, I live right across the street from where it happened," Derek Hackett said. "It's starting to feel unsafe to live down here," Dennis Crawford said.

All day law enforcement officers removed the chemicals. When they eventually took off, I followed them to an apartment complex on Railroad and Bagley. Police say it's where the accused meth makers were living.

"With reasonable belief that they brought other product back here," added Lieutenant Henry.

Police won't say how much meth they found, but are glad to be getting it off the streets.

"Is it a real problem? Not yet. Is it out there in this area? Yes," Lieutenant Henry said.

One officer said it wasn't a sophisticated operation. There weren't Bunsen burners and cylinders as one would imagine. It was more like two liter soda bottles with chemicals mixed together inside.
