Emus, Horse Test Positive For EEE in NH

Posted: Updated:
CONCORD, N.H. -

Two emus and a horse have tested positive for equine encephalitis in New Hampshire, marking the first time the potentially fatal brain infection has been found in the state's animals this season.

The Department of Health and Human Services says because of the findings, the risk level has been raised to "high" for Fitzwilliam, where the emus are located, and in Derry, where the horse is located. Also, the towns of Seabrook, South Hampton and Newton have had their risk level raised to moderate following the identification of someone in northeastern Massachusetts with EEE.

Of the more than 4,000 batches of mosquitoes the state has analyzed, three have tested positive for EEE.

Forty batches have tested positive for West Nile virus, and one person has been diagnosed with that virus.
