PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -
Nearly 17 years to the day that the Plattsburgh Air Force Base closed, the final parcel of the former military facility has been transferred to the local government.
The Press-Republican of Plattsburgh reports that Kathleen Ferguson, an Air Force official who began her career at the base, was in Plattsburgh Wednesday for the ceremony transferring the final 732-acre parcel of the former air base to Clinton County.
The nearly 3,500-acre site along Lake Champlain's western shore is now owned by the county's redevelopment corporation.
The base was closed in September 1995, two years after the Base Realignment and Closure Commission announced that the air base would be shut down.
So far, more than 60 businesses have set up shop at the former base. It's also home to the expanding Plattsburgh International Airport.
