BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Yesterday we told you 49-year-old Scott Sgorbati became the 2nd Vermonter to die from eastern equine encephalitis, more commonly known as "triple-E."

Earlier this month, 87-year-old Richard Breen also died from the disease that infects the brain.

Last week, the state sprayed for infected mosquitoes. And with winter around the corner, mosquitoes will be killed-off by the cold.

The Health Commissioner says on average, there are only six cases nationwide each year.

"These diseases are here, they've been here for a long time, likely they will remain a part of our lives and we need to take the common sense precautions to protect ourselves," Commissioner Harry Chen said.

The Health Department says you need to protect yourself from mosquito bites. Limit the amount of time you spend outside, use insect repellent, and remove any standing water at your home or business.
