BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Harold Porter, 45, of Swanton, Vt. was sentenced to 30 years to life Tuesday for attempted kidnapping.

A press release says on September 9, 2009, Porter attempted to abduct a young woman on Colchester Avenue in Burlington, Vt.

"This is an appropriate sentence that clearly sends the message that violence against women will be dealt with harshly and will not be tolerated," TJ Donovan, Chittenden County State's Attorney, said.

Porter had previously been convicted in 2001 of 2nd degree unlawful restraint and prohibited act.

Porter is a registered sex offender in Vermont.
