SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -
With archery hunting season opening for deer and moose early October classes are filling up for hunter education courses. But there's been a shift in the typical makeup of the class and now women are coming out in bigger numbers.
At the 10 hour course in the South Burlington police station, it was a lot of info for Ashley Grant to take in.
"I've never used a harness before or used a bow so like everything's new," Grant said.
She has rifle hunted before, just like Danielle Densmore-Buschi. She is also at the class.
"I've hunted in the past like rifle hunting but I want to get into bow hunting," Densmore-Buschi said.
That's a feeling shared by many women and girls across the country who are trying out something that never peaked their interest before until…
"The Hunger Games" there's a lot of archery in that," Densmore-Buschi said.
The movie has been an absolute hit among the teenage crowd and has been in the top five of iTunes movies sales ever since it was released.
But pop culture is not the only reason women are entering the sport.
"I already rifle hunt but I want to have more of a challenge to bow hunting," Grant said.
But the challenge may have to wait for some of them.
"I'm getting a new bow then practice. I probably won't hunt this year but maybe next year," Densmore-Buschi said.
Next year there's bound to be even more women picking up the arrow and taking aim at something they hadn't tried before.
