Gov. Shumlin Kicks Off Re-election Campaign

Posted: Updated:

Governor Peter Shumlin officially kicked off his re-election campaign in Burlington, Monday night.

The governor was busy all day starting early this morning with interviews and visiting businesses around the state to officially kick off his campaign but it was his announcement party that really rallied his supporters.  The room at Nectars Restaurant in Burlington was jam packed as people crowded in to hear Governor Peter Shumlin kick off his re-election campaign.

"I'm really excited about running another two years as governor, it's a real privilege to have this job, we're creating jobs and we are making real progress," said Gov. Shumlin.

Shumlin talked about balancing the budget, clean energy and easing healthcare costs, "We need to get healthcare spending under control, so that job creators don't have all of their expendable income gobbled up by rising healthcare costs."

After Governor Shumlin's speech tonight the crowd says they are energized and ready for the next eight weeks of campaigning.

"He's right on track; Vermonters are not going back, we are making progress, we are going to move forward and be the envy of the nation," said Shumlin supporter, Steve Howard.

"I think there is just a really great grassroots momentum, that goes past the democratic party that goes to progressives and independents and republicans and it's a really huge great group of people, so we are psyched to get out there and campaign," said State Representative, Jill Krowinski.

When it comes to his opponent, Senator Randy Brock, Shumlin says the two have very different visions for the future, "We're getting results, but you're not going to do it by going back to the past, or by not being willing to have the courage to make some waves, I do and I hope Vermonters will elect me for another two years."

Republican Challenger, Senator Randy Brock says he spent the night campaigning in Franklin, Chittenden and Washington counties. He too is looking forward to the next 8 weeks of campaigning and is happy that Governor Shumlin finally opened up his campaign.
