Sheep and Goats Used as Lawn Mowers

Posted: Updated:
CHARLOTTE, Vt. -

Sheep and goats eat grass, and grass needs to be mowed ... so the town of Charlotte has come up with the perfect way to combine the two - use the sheep and goats as lawn mowers.

The town tried it for the first time this year at a cemetery. Four animals chewed away the overgrown grass and saved the town an estimated two thousand dollars. The innovative idea will allow them to put the money into other projects.

"We really need it to fix broken stones and do other expensive maintenance tasks that have been neglected or even on going," Stephen Brooks, Chairman of the Charlotte Cemetery Commission said.

The plan is to get a few more animals on deck - and have them start mowing again in June.
Usually the cemetery gets mowed 21 times a year - this year, it only needed three.
