Battle of Plattsburgh Commemoration gets Under Way

Posted: Updated:
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -

(AP) - A northern New York community is holding its annual commemoration of one of the most important battles of the War of 1812.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the start of the war between the United States and Britain, and this weekend's Battle of Plattsburgh events are among the many ways New York state is commemorating the conflict over the next two years.

American land and naval units defeated an invading British force at Plattsburgh on Lake Champlain's western shore on Sept. 11, 1814.

Plattsburgh's commemoration weekend events include a parade Saturday afternoon, battle re-enactments both days, boat races and tours of the 150-foot-tall monument the U.S. government built in the city of Plattsburgh in the 1920s to mark the American victory over the British.
