Sunscreen is Needed All Year Round

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

It's a common misconception, slather on the sunscreen only in the summer. But dermatologists say, no matter what time of year it is - and yes, that even includes Vermont winters, SPF should applied.

Doctors say, if you're using enough of it, SPF 15 should be fine. Those harmful UV rays that cause skin cancer can be deadly. In fact, because Vermont's large number of Caucasians, skin cancer rates are extremely high.

"When you're out skiing and it's a bright sunny day, there's actually a lot of reflection off the snow and the amount of light can be enough to burn you quite easily," Fletcher Allen dermatologist Dr. Glenn Goldman said.

Doctors also recommend doing outdoor activities in the morning or evening, to avoid the sun when it's the strongest - in the afternoon... and to be extra safe, remember, clothing works even better than sunscreen.
