The Progressive primary results have narrowed to a one-vote difference between the party-backed gubernatorial candidate Martha Abbott and write-in candidate Annette Smith.
The secretary of state's office on Thursday held an emergency meeting of the election canvassing committee to re-examine results that had been made official on Tuesday only to have errors discovered since then.
The results certified Thursday show Abbott defeating Smith 371 to 370. Smith immediately left the afternoon meeting and walked to the Washington County Superior Court to request a recount.
Secretary of State Jim Condos says he hopes the recount can be completed next week.
